Learn about the latest thinking on what works and where

Through a participatory workshop, develop a better appreciation of the challenges faced by colleagues in allied professions

With contributions from architecture and urbanism experts including Martin Cook from BRE, this event aims to shine a light on this crucial area of design and planning. It will clearly explain and make relevant a topic that can appear complex and confusing to many. This session is therefore suitable for those who are new to the subject and want to know more; as well as for planners, urban designers and architects who are already experienced in the design and delivery of sustainable architecture. Therefore it can be attended by both design and build or regeneration professionals and the many stakeholders involved in the planning processes.

Venue: Enterprise Pavilion, Arts University College Bournemouth, Fern Barrow, Wallisdown, Poole BH12 5HH

Fee for day to include lunch and refreshments £45*

Hopefully by now you’ve had a chance to explore our new-look website and have a reasonably good idea of what The Ideas Factory is about. Now we want to hear what you think!

We would love for you to complete our very short and anonymous survey. You can write as little or as much as you like - venting is more than welcome, because if we don’t know what you want then we can’t help!

In particular we would like to know:

What functions/capabilities would you like from the site?

What do you believe could improve the local arts community?

What sort of topics or advice would you like to receive, or would like to see covered in training/talks/workshops? What would be beneficial to you as an artist and help you sell/exhibit your work successfully?

…and any other comments, suggestions, requests or ideas?

Remember: the survey is 100% anonymous, so please say what you think! What is missing in the Poole/Dorset area for artists? What would you like to see more or less of? What’s good about the local arts scene and how could this be improved further?

Please also bear in mind that The Ideas Factory is aimed towards the applied arts and crafts sector so we are particularly interested in thoughts regarding this area.

We really look forward to hearing your responses and hopefully taking as many suggestions, ideas or criticisms on board so that we can work with these. We have close ties with many local arts organisations and would be happy to pass on any popular requests, comments or interesting suggestions to the appropriate people.

CLICK HERE to take The Ideas Factory survey!

Calling all musicians! An upcoming local musicians collective is starting and we need you!

Whilst not strictly in our craft remit, a very good friend of the Ideas Factory is recruiting local musicians for a fantastic new project and as we know the world of art and music so often cross-over, we are keen to spread the word:

Probably the best known example of a Musicians Collective in Britain is the band Bellowhead. As it says on their website, ‘Blending folk, rock, ska, jazz, soul and world music influences with dashes of English Music Hall and cabaret, the 11 musicians of Bellowhead play more than 20 instruments, six of them sing and their arrangements are already the stuff of legend.’

Of course a new collective has to start somewhere - and the starting point for us is deciding to get together every week to play live music - and putting out this invitation for you to join us.

Once the music starts to flow it might well lead to us writing our own numbers, working on arrangements, discovering fusions of different styles of music - I love celtic beats, latin and world music as well as the folk, rock, funk and jazz most people play - and then we’ll probably go on to arrange gigs and studio recording sessions when the time is right.

But all that is for the future.

Right now I’m looking for a small group of committed musicians to be at the musical core of this project.
If you are interested, contact me at liveandopen@googlemail.com.

Art Boot Sale is a busy monthly event happening on every last Saturday of the month in the Courtyard at KUBE. The event brings together the best local and regional artists working in various art forms selling their work directly to the public. The entry is free and it is worth to experience a unique mixture of local arts! For artists it is a fantastic and very affordable opportunity to sell your work but also get feedback and network with other local artists.

Julian, a visitor said: “It is a fabulous event, very relaxed with great music and the café in the gallery to sooth your mind after all the shopping in the courtyard! It was great and I must say alternative Saturday shopping trip. We ended up acquiring a stunning painting for our dining room, but actually what made my day was conversations with all these creative people.”

Each Art Boot Sale invites artists of ALL ART FORMS to come and sell their work. However each month KUBE focus on certain art forms and give 60% of places to one of them. All artists who wish to sell their work directly to public are invited.

Emma, one of the participating artists said: “A lot of people liked my work so it was good to get that feedback. It’s the first time I’ve shown my work to the general public so it’s been really good for my confidence. I’d recommend this as a gentle way in for people showing and selling their work the first time. With it just being a couple of hours and £5 a pitch, it’s a brilliant opportunity to test the water!”

Sellers: No commission on sales, KUBE just charge £5 for the space. Allocation of the pitch from 10am. Please book your pitch in advance!

Come and buy the experience or a unique, hand made product from local and regional artists. Celebrate with us local talents!

UPCOMING ART BOOT SALES:

2nd Birthday is a local group of artists with a vision: to create an arts space/cafe/bar/events venue that will kick of Bournemouth’s cultural revolution!

The space will be a home for film, music, theatre, dance and visual art exhibitions and the best bit is that YOU can get involved! By offering them something (making a pledge) to help them develop the space, in return they will offer you a ‘2nd birthday’… ie. your event run in the space. For more details on this exciting new communal project, visit the 2nd Birthday website (like us, they’ve recently had a fabulous new make-over!!)

This Summer, 2nd Birthday have some fantastic projects in the pipeline entitled ‘Sideshow’ and are looking for artists, whatever their medium, to get involved. This is their call-out:

—————————————————

SHOP WINDOWS

Working with our friends at Bournemouth Creatives we will be opening up shop windows across Bournemouth for artists to show and sell existing work.

2ND BIRTHDAYS ABANDONED BUILDING

We are taking over a sad abandoned building. This space is not your average space. Awkward and vast, visitors will be led through the building to wonder at what has been created.

The space will be open from morning to night for 2 days during Side Show and will include new art work which places an emphasis on interactivity and experience. There are a number of opportunities…

We have £2000 to commission new site responsive art work in any medium. We are interested in ideas… from tiny installations to huge hanging sculptures or group activities so let us know what you would like to do with a proposed budget.

Our lovely friends who have pledged their stuff to make 2nd Birthday happen can propose their 2nd Birthday event…. really this can be anything! We have a small amount or money to help set these events up so let us know what you would like to do.

Please send your proposals via e-mail to <!--

SIDESHOW BROCHURE DESIGN

We are currently designing our brochure for Sideshow and in the participatory style of 2nd birthday we are looking for your help!.

We’re going to make a brochure to advertise all the events above, we’re thinking black and white line drawings - imagine David Shrigley mixed with a carnival, a circus, freak shows, think quirky, quick, observational… Wait, that is David Shrigley. Anyway you know what we mean.

Send us your designs for our festival guide and we’ll publish the good ‘uns.

Design Notes: The brochure will be A6, so make sure you’re drawings will work on this size. Keep it black and white!

Outcome: The joy of having your credited artwork published in 2000 brochures.
